Program for Eye Care Administrators
Duration: One year
Places available: Six per session
Session commences: In January and July every year
Eligibility: A bachelor's degree in any discipline
Selection: The selection process is based on written tests and interviews
Program objectives
- To help the trainee to acquire an in-depth understanding of the purpose and functions of the different departments in an eye care facility
- To encourage active participation in various aspects of eye care service delivery
- To promote critical thinking
- To equip trainees to manage an eye care facility on their own
Training
Students are trained at the L V Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad, and at LVPEI's rural eye care centres. Trainees can work in rotation between patient care services, finance and material management, general administration, the training centre, and support services. Training also involves a detailed orientation in the functions of each department and active participation in the daily activities of the department.
LVPEI has two satellite eye care centres in rural Andhra Pradesh. These satellite centres have good infrastructure and adequate manpower, each one being staffed by 20 trained eye care personnel who handle 15,000 out-patients and 1,500 surgeries annually.
Each trainee eye care manager will work in rotation as an administrator at one of these centres to gain hands-on experience in managing an eye centre independently. The training will be closely supervised by the centre's administrator.
Academic work
Students are expected to demonstrate responsibility and participate actively in meeting the objectives of the program. They are required to submit monthly activity reports and make a presentation to the faculty at the end of the program. They are also required to carry out administration-related projects. Projects can be decided in consultation with the department head or a member of the faculty.
Stipend and leave benefits
Trainees will receive a monthly stipend. Sponsored candidates are not eligible for stipends from LVPEI but will receive stipends directly from their sponsoring agencies. Trainees are allowed 12 days leave during the year.
Food and accommodation
Trainees will be provided accommodation within the Institute campus on a firstcome-first-served basis. The hostels have vegetarian cafeteria services.
