Fellowships in Sub-specialties of the Eye

The first three months of the fellowship constitute a probation period during which the fellows will learn basic examination techniques in cornea, glaucoma and retina. Part of this period will be spent at the LVP - Zeiss Academy where they will also learn the relevant diagnostic procedures. The trainees' performance is evaluated at the end of this period and the fellowship may be terminated if the candidate is found unsuitable.

For the next 12 months the fellows work in rotation with faculty members in the subspecialty of her/his choice, and also in para-clinical departments like microbiology and pathology to gain experience in diagnostic techniques. For the last nine months of the fellowship, the fellows will work as Associates in the Institute in the respective subspecialty, to gain on-the-job exposure.

During the course of the fellowship, there is ample opportunity for fellows to handle general ophthalmic cases independently and consult with the faculty of various subspecialties in related ophthalmic diseases. This enables them to draw upon the expertise of various specialists. They also have an opportunity to perform surgeries independently, and follow up on surgical cases.

Fellows are also required to review the medical records of patients in the hospital and present a summary of the case history.

Classes are held on all weekdays at the Institute. Fellows are required to present case studies in the clinical grand rounds, articles in the journal clubs and attend topical seminars. Each fellow is assigned an academic advisor. Fellows are also required to initiate and complete a minimum of one prospective and one retrospective study during the program. The areas of study include:
