Short Term Fellowship in Glaucoma

The objective is to train relatively senior ophthalmologists who are interested in developing the subspecialty in their hospital. By virtue of the seniority it is expected that there is no need for hands-on surgical training. The candidate should be able to gain form the spectrum of the disease seen and the individualized management options exercised in the course of three months.

Duration: Three months

Session commences: January, April, July and October every year.

Places available: One candidate in each session.

Qualifications:Practicing ophthalmic surgeons with experience in the specialty/subspecialty.

Selection: The applicant should have the potential to develop the subspecialty service at his/her location.

Application procedure: Applications must be accompanied with curriculum vitae, a copy of the applicant's MBBS and PG diploma or certificate, as well as a letter from the sponsor.

Course Curriculum

Clinical
The Fellow will be trained in the use of applanation tonometry, gonioscopy, slit-lamp biomicroscopy, indirect ophthalmoscopy and stereoscopic disc evaluation (78D lens) automated perimetry.

Diagnostics:
The Fellow will be trained in the use of automated perimetry, short-Wave automated perimetry, frequency doubling perimetry, stereoscopic disc photography, scanning laser ophthalmoscopy (HRT), nerve fibre layer polarimetry (GDx), optical coherence tomography (OCT) and ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM)

Training in the use of Laser equipment: Nd-YAG iridotomy, Argon laser trabeculoplasty, suturolysis, and gonioplasty, Transcleral cyclophotocoagulation

Surgical Techniques: An opportunity for 'hands on' surgery is not provided, but the trainee will be allowed to assist in all types of glaucoma surgeries.
