Ophthalmic Theatre Technicians

Program Objectives

The aim of this program is to train young boys as Ophthalmic Theatre Technicians to provide comprehensive eye care to patients with sincerity and dedication.

The program will enable ophthalmic theatre assistants to become conversant with basic ocular anatomy and physiology. They will develop a better understanding of common eye disorders, anesthesia, in addition to their technical skills, as a foundation for specialty training..

They will assist anesthetist during the local and general anesthesia. They will be trained to identify potential complications postoperatively. They will be trained in sterilization and as well as in Anesthesia. The course will inculcate in them the thirst for continuous learning and self-improvement.

Admission Procedure

Basic qualifications

Applicants should be candidates who have passed Class X with not less than 50 percent marks in the overall aggregate. They should be between 17 to 25 years of age.

Mode of selection

The session commences in February and August every year. Final selections will be held in January and July after an entrance examination and interview at LVPEI. The management decision regarding selection of candidates would be final, no appeals will be entertained. Preference will be given to applicants who have secured good marks.

Program Details

Short-term program

We also provide specialized short-term training to Operation theatre personnel for delivering quality care to ophthalmic patients. The candidates’ eligible for this course has to successfully complete their Intermediate from a science background or any similar +2 or diploma in science field, or as part of a vocational course.

Long-term program

The duration of the program is two years – the first year is divided into two semesters, and the second year includes an internship.

In the first semester, trainees will learn the Anatomy and physiology, therapeutic communications and pharmacology. The second semester will focus on common ocular disorders, ophthalmic theatre, and anesthesia, which will be followed by practical experience.

In the second year, i.e. internship, the students will undergo supervised and intensive practical training. This helps bridge the gap between the academic perspectives and the conflict between practical experiences upon entering the work arena. The experience will enable them to gain confidence in their professional skills.

Internal examiners will conduct examinations at the end of each semester. There will be three theory papers followed by practical.

The trainees’ progress will be monitored regularly and evaluated each month and the scores mailed to their parents/guardians.

Supplementary examinations
At the end of both the first and second semester supplementary examinations will be held for candidates who have failed. If candidates fail in the supplementary examinations too, their names will be struck off the rolls.

Boarding and lodging
Trainees will be provided free, shared bachelors’ accommodation in our hostels.

Cafeteria services are available within the campus at subsidized rates.

Stipend and leave
Candidates will receive a monthly stipend of Rs 500 during the first year and Rs 600 during the second year. During the second year candidates will receive a monthly stipend of Rs 3500.

The Short term trainees will receive a stipend of Rs. 500 during first 6 months and an amount of 3500/- in the last six months during the internship.

Trainees will be allowed 12 days leave per year, in addition to designated holidays. Additional leave will be granted only for reasons of health after proper justification.
